Cognitive mediation theory
Observational learning could not occur unless some cognitive factors were at work
These factors mediate in the learning process
Processes the movement information into a symbolic memory code and translated back into motor code
Sub-process of modeling
Attention process - involves observing and extracting information from the model
Dictates extent to which we notice the action/ full attention is necessary
Retention process - process what is modeled into symbolic codes
dictated how well the action is remembered
Behavior reproduction process - translated the memory code of movement into physical action
Motivation process - the will to perform the modeled movement
Dynamic view of modeling
No need for symbolic coding step
What we see directly provides the basis for coordination
Verbal instruction and attention
Amount of information - beginner: divided attention between remembering and performing
Focus attention to - movement outcome vs the movement itself
