Auditory Closure
The brain's ability to fill in missing auditory and linguistic information using stored linguistic knowledge.
IEEE Sentences
Sentences developed by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, derived from Harvard's World War II phonetically balanced sentences, used in speech-in-noise testing like the QuickSIN.
Fixed Signal to Noise Ratio
A test condition where the signal-to-noise ratio is set at a single level throughout evaluating the patient, as seen in the SPIN test and Connected Speech Test.
Adaptive Signal to Noise Ratio
A test condition where either the speech signal or background noise is varied during evaluation depending on the test protocol.
Original SIN Test (1997)
A speech-in-noise test developed by Killion in 1997 using IEEE sentences at 4 signal-to-noise ratios (15dB, 10dB, 5dB, and 0dB) at 70 dB HL and 40 dB HL presentation levels, which fell out of clinical use due to convoluted scoring and limited list availability.
QuickSIN
A speech-in-noise test using IEEE sentences spoken by a female talker in four-talker babble across 6 signal-to-noise ratios (25dB to 0dB), where SNR loss is calculated as 25.5−correct score.
BKB-SIN
Bamford-Kowal-Bench Speech in Noise test using simple sentence material spoken by a male talker with background noise changing by 3dB steps from +21dB to −6dB, scored using the calculation 23.5−total correct score.
Binaural Interference
A condition occurring in approximately 17% of the population across ages where speech recognition performance is poorer binaurally than monaurally.
Right Ear Advantage
A auditory processing outcome where speech recognition is superior in the right ear, reflecting left-hemisphere speech processing dominance present in over 90% of people.
Hearing in Noise Test (HINT)
An adaptive speech-in-noise test taking 5 to 10 minutes where the background noise level remains constant while the signal level varies.
