Wound Healing - First Intention
Wound healing that involves closed edges, minimal tissue loss, and the use of sutures or stitches.
Wound Healing - Second Intention
Wound healing characterized by more distant edges, more significant tissue loss, and the formation of granulation tissue.
Hemostasis
The first phase of wound healing where blood vessels constrict and a clot forms.
Proliferation Phase of Wound Healing
The phase occurring 2-3 days after injury where new tissue begins to form.
Exudate
Liquid material that can be serous (clear) or purulent (containing neutrophils) found in tissue spaces.
Abscess
A localized collection of pus that forms as a result of inflammation.
Keloids
Irregular, raised scars that form from excessive collagen during the wound healing process.
Endogenous Infection
An infection caused by organisms already present in the body.
Exogenous Infection
An infection caused by organisms originating from outside the body.
Infection Stages
Incubation, prodromal, invasion/acute illness, and convalescence.
Innate Immunity
The body's first line of defense against pathogens, consisting of physical barriers.
Adaptive Immunity
The immunity that develops over time and involves memory of specific pathogens.
Type I Hypersensitivity Reaction
An immediate hypersensitivity reaction typically mediated by IgE and can result in anaphylaxis.
Anaphylaxis
A severe, life-threatening allergic reaction that can occur within minutes of exposure to an allergen.
Antibiotic Suffixes and Prefixes
Common naming conventions for antibiotics indicating their class or action, such as -cillin for penicillins and -floxacin for fluoroquinolones.
Complete Antibiotic Course
It’s vital to finish the entire prescribed course of antibiotics to reduce the risk of resistance.
Superinfection
An infection that occurs during or after treatment with antibiotics, often due to antibiotic resistance.
Photosensitivity
Increased sensitivity to sunlight caused by certain antibiotics, leading to potential skin reactions.
