Materials Processing Purpose
To give us the tools and language to understand what’s going on in a machine shop.
Steel Scale
a exact measuring tool that measures from the end of the rectangle in metric or imperial.
Manufacturing
A sequence of operations
Waste
non-value added goods/services (time, transport, labor, etc.)
Materials Processing
value-added process
Consumer Goods
goods that we “consumers” want to buy
Capital Goods
goods needed for service use; may eventually become a consumer good
Metals
a type of element characterized by having a low relative electronegativity making it malleable and/or ductile.
Properties: Ferrous vs. non-Ferrous; with Iron (Fe) or not with iron.
Ex: Ferrous: Steel, Non-Ferrous: Copper, Aluminum, Bronze
Ceramics
a nonmetallic, inorganic solid material, typically made from compounds of metals and nonmetals, held together by ionic and covalent bonds
Properties: Bio compatible/food safe, super hard, good insulator, brittle
Ex: clay, silica, alumina, silica carbide
Polymers
a type of material to which humans can construct and create any material property with
Properties: low melting point, durable, inexpensive
Ex: thermoplastics, elastomers, AVS PVC, Poly Urethane, thermosets
Composites
two or more materials woven together of different physical/chemical properties
Properties: High strength/weight ratio, expensive, process intensive
Ex: Kevlar
Processing Operations
Molding:
Forming: shaping (malleable/ductile)
Material Removal
Permanent Jointing Operations
Glue/Mortaring
Welding/Soldering
Mechanical (partial) Fastening
Replaceable, Modular Design, Easier Construction
Screws, Bolts/nuts, nails
Manufacturing Support System
Manufacturing Engineer
Product Planning & Control
Quality Control
Vertical Integration
owning multiple segments of the supply chain
Horizontal Integration
owning multiple of the same segment of the supply chain
