TYPES OF CHARACTERS

ENGLISH 7TH GRADE

dynamic character

A character that changes throughout the story. They are changed through the conflicts they endure through the course of the story.

Protagonist

Main character in a story who is dealing with the main conflict. This is the character that they reader/audience empathizes with.

Antagonist

the force working against the protagonist

static character

A character that does not change from the beginning of the story to the end

minor character

Less important characters in the story interact with the main character and help to move the plot along.

foil character (opposite of MC)

a character who in many ways directly contrasts or is the opposite of the Main Character.

alternate path

a character who represents a different choice or path that the main character could have taken

historical representative

a character that represents a large group of people, a country, a viewpoint, or an idea

supports

The character is there to support, uplift, guide, or mentor the main character.

challenges

the character questions, challenges, coaches, or provides tough love
