Variable
A symbol used to represent an unknown value or quantity in mathematical expressions and equations.
Coefficient
A numerical or constant factor that multiplies a variable in an algebraic expression.
Constant
A fixed value that does not change and is not multiplied by a variable in an algebraic expression.
Like Terms
Terms in an algebraic expression that have the same variable raised to the same power, allowing them to be combined through addition or subtraction.
Base (Number)
The number that is raised to a power in an exponential expression, indicating how many times to multiply itself.
Exponent
The number that indicates how many times the base is multiplied by itself in an exponential expression.
Numerator
The top part of a fraction that represents the number of parts being considered out of a whole.
Denominator
The bottom part of a fraction that represents the total number of equal parts into which the whole is divided.
Equivalent Fraction
A fraction that represents the same value as another fraction, achieved by multiplying or dividing both the numerator and denominator by the same non-zero number.
Improper Fraction
A fraction where the numerator is greater than or equal to the denominator.
LCM
Two or more numbers, which is the smallest multiple that is evenly divisible by each of the numbers.
Reciprocal
The reciprocal of a number is 1 divided by that number, or the fraction obtained by flipping the numerator and denominator.
Divisible
A number is divisible by another if it can be divided without leaving a remainder.
factor
a number that divides another number evenly, leaving no remainder.
Multiple
A multiple of a number is the product of that number and an integer, meaning it can be expressed as that number multiplied by whole numbers.
Operation
is a mathematical process, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division, that combines numbers to produce a new value.
Difference
is the result of subtracting one number from another, indicating how much larger or smaller one number is compared to another.
Product
The product is the result of multiplying two or more numbers together, representing the total quantity obtained from this operation.
Quotient
is the result of dividing one number by another, representing how many times the divisor fits into the dividend.
Sum
is the result of adding two or more numbers together, representing the total amount obtained from this operation.
Counting Number
is a positive integer used for counting and ordering, starting from 1 and extending infinitely (1, 2, 3, ...).
Whole Number
A ___ number is a non-negative integer that includes zero and all positive integers, used for counting and ordering (0, 1, 2, 3, ...).
Rational Number
is any number that can be expressed as the quotient or fraction of two integers, where the denominator is not zero. Examples include integers, fractions, and finite or repeating decimals.
Irrational Number
is a number that cannot be expressed as a simple fraction or quotient of two integers. Its decimal representation goes on forever without repeating, such as \sqrt{2} or \pi.
Prime Number
is a natural number greater than 1 that has no positive divisors other than 1 and itself. Examples include 2, 3, 5, 7, and 11.
Composite Number
is a natural number greater than 1 that has more than two positive divisors, meaning it can be divided evenly by numbers other than 1 and itself. Examples include 4, 6, 8, and 9.
Perfect Square
Made by squaring a number of
Expression
A mathematical phrase that can contain numbers, variables, and operators but does not have an equals sign. Examples include 3x + 5 and 2(a - b).
Equal
A mathematical statement that asserts the equality of two expressions, typically represented with an equals sign (=).
Equation
A mathematical statement that asserts the equality of two expressions, typically containing an equals sign. An example is 2x + 3 = 7.
Inequality
A mathematical statement that compares two expressions using inequality symbols (>, <, ≥, ≤) to show that they are not equal. An example is x + 2 < 5.
Solution
The value or set of values that satisfy an equation or inequality, making it true.
Evaluate
To compute the numerical value of an expression by replacing its variables with specific numbers.
reduce
To simplify an expression or fraction by eliminating common factors or terms.
Substiution
Putting the values where the letters are
Proportion
A mathematical equation that shows two ratios are equal, often used to solve for an unknown variable.
Percent
Parts Per 100
Square Root
A value that, when multiplied by itself, gives the original number.
Absolute Value
The distance of a number from zero on the number line, regardless of direction.
