He wanted to stay in his native place, 'in the nest of his family', 'and he wanted to have children, 'in raising a family'. He wanted his wife to be at home looking after them, 'on the hearth of the fire'. The poet creates an image of an old-fashioned traditional marriage in the first half of this poem.

Ach níor chuir an fear aon bhéim ar ghrá sa phosadh. Bhí mianta an fhir dirithe ar an gclann agus ar an mbaile ach níor chuir sé aon bhéim ar an duine eile sa chaidreamh.

But the man did not put any emphasis on love in the marriage. The man's desires were focused on the family and the home but he did not put any emphasis on the other person in the relationship.

The poet creates an image of a modern independent woman in the second half of the poem. Like the man, she also wanted to be married. 'She wanted a husband'.

But there were not many other similarities between them. She wanted to be independent and equal in the relationship. 'half the pants...half the cake'

She did not want to be depending on her husband.. She wanted to make her own choices. Like the man, she had definite opinions about married life. But the desires of the woman were focused outside the home: holidays, wealth, status. 'holidays abroad/is the price of thousands'.

The woman did not place any emphasis on love either. She placed more emphasis on her own desires than on the man she married

It is clear that the desires of the two were at odds with each other and the heart of the problem and conflict can be seen there. The gap between them was unbridgeable. They were not suitable for each other.

There was a huge difference between their desires and the married couple could not find a compromise. They were unable to overcome their difficulties, and so they parted ways. At the end of the poem, the poet says with irony that they had resolved the problem. "A solution was reached." "They parted ways."
