LIGHT MICROSCOPE

most common

• different absorption of light that is bettered by staining

• light passes and that is what we see

PHASE CONTRAST MICROSCOPE

• optical device that can show minute distances (details)

INTERFERANCE MICROSCOPE

• two beams of light and can measure distance of tissues

FLUORESCENT MICROSCOPE

• uses uv (different wavelengths) and give you different colors

TRANSMISSION ELECTRON MICROSCOPE

• does NOT use light, uses beam of electrons that are bombarded on the slide

  • cannot see with the naked eye ( can hurt your eyes)

SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPE

• can use tv monitor to move to screen for specimen separation

specimen prep for electron microscopy

• must be dehydrated (NO WATER)

• Fixative

  • chemical (osmium tetroxide)

with both electrons microscope you will

be given a picture with no color (color later added)

atomic force microscopy

• most powerful

• can literally feel the surface of cell with tool (fingertip probe)

• probe passes surface
