Le présent (Uses)
Used for something happening now, a habit or routine, a general fact, or sometimes the near future.
Regular -ER Verb Endings (Present Tense)
je -e, tu -es, il/elle/on -e, nous -ons, vous -ez, ils/elles -ent
Regular -IR Verb Endings (Present Tense)
je -is, tu -is, il/elle/on -it, nous -issons, vous -issez, ils/elles -issent
Regular -RE Verb Endings (Present Tense)
je -s, tu -s, il/elle/on —, nous -ons, vous -ez, ils/elles -ent
ÊTRE (Present Tense)
je suis, tu es, il/elle/on est, nous sommes, vous êtes, ils/elles sont
AVOIR (Present Tense)
j'ai, tu as, il/elle/on a, nous avons, vous avez, ils/elles ont
ALLER (Present Tense)
je vais, tu vas, il/elle/on va, nous allons, vous allez, ils/elles vont
FAIRE (Present Tense)
je fais, tu fais, il/elle/on fait, nous faisons, vous faites, ils/elles font
Passé Composé (Uses & Formula)
Used for something that happened and was completed in the past. Formula: Subject + auxiliary (usually AVOIR) + past participle.
Regular Past Participles Formation
-ER verbs drop -er and add -é (e.g. parler → parlé); -IR verbs drop -ir and add -i (e.g. finir → fini); -RE verbs drop -re and add -u (e.g. vendre → vendu).
ÊTRE Past Participle Agreement
When using ÊTRE as auxiliary, agreement is added to the past participle: feminine singular adds -e, masculine plural adds -s, feminine plural adds -es.
Common Irregular Past Participles (Set 1)
avoir → eu, être → été, faire → fait, prendre → pris, mettre → mis, voir → vu, lire → lu, boire → bu, devoir → dû, pouvoir → pu, vouloir → voulu, savoir → su
Common Irregular Past Participles (Set 2)
venir → venu, ouvrir → ouvert, écrire → écrit, dire → dit, vivre → vécu, recevoir → reçu
Imparfait (Uses)
Translates as 'WAS doing', 'USED TO do', or 'WOULD do'. Used for repeated/habitual actions, descriptions, background info, age, weather, time, feelings/states, and ongoing actions.
Imparfait Formation & Endings
Take the NOUS present form, remove -ons, and add endings: je -ais, tu -ais, il/elle/on -ait, nous -ions, vous -iez, ils/elles -aient.
ÊTRE Imparfait Stem & Conjugation
The only major irregular stem is ét-: j'étais, tu étais, il était, nous étions, vous étiez, ils étaient.
Futur Simple (Uses & Formation)
Expresses something that will happen. Formed by taking the entire infinitive and adding endings: je -ai, tu -as, il/elle/on -a, nous -ons, vous -ez, ils/elles -ont.
Essential Irregular Future Stems
être → ser-, avoir → aur-, aller → ir-, faire → fer-, venir → viendr-, devoir → devr-, pouvoir → pourr-, vouloir → voudr-, savoir → saur-, voir → verr-, recevoir → recevr-
Conditionnel Présent (Uses & Formation)
Translates as 'would'. Used for hypothetical situations, polite requests, wishes/desires, and possibilities. Formed using Future stem + Imparfait endings (-Rais, -Rais, -Rait, -Rions, -Riez, -Raient).
Future vs. Conditional Rule
FUTURE = future stem + future endings (e.g. Je parlerai = I will speak). CONDITIONAL = future stem + imperfect endings (e.g. Je parlerais = I would speak).
Participe Présent
Translates as -ing. Formed by taking the NOUS present form, removing -ons, and adding -ant (e.g. parlant). 'En + participe présent' means 'while/by + -ing'.
Irregular Present Participles
être → étant, avoir → ayant, savoir → sachant
Direct Object Pronouns (COD)
Receives the action directly (answers Who? or What?). Pronouns: me / m', te / t', le / l' (him/it), la / l' (her/it), nous, vous, les (them).
Indirect Object Pronouns (COI)
Comes after à and answers To whom? / For whom?. Pronouns: me / m' (to me), te / t' (to you), lui (to him/her), nous (to us), vous (to you), leur (to them).
Direct vs. Indirect Object Pronoun Rule
DIRECT = no à (uses LE / LA / LES). INDIRECT = à + person (uses LUI / LEUR).
Object Pronoun Placement Rules
Generally placed BEFORE the conjugated verb (Je le regarde). In Passé Composé: placed before auxiliary avoir/être (Je lui ai parlé). With Infinitive: placed before the infinitive (Je vais le regarder).
