ARCH BRIDGES main characteristics:
1. High strength
2. Has supports at each end
3. Materials can bare the weight under compression
4. Span from 60 to 240m
5. Deck is either supported or hung from the main structure
1. Deck Arch Bridge:
- deck on top of arch
- supported by spanderals
- spandrels: number of vertical columns or solid wall spandrels
- Another name: cathedral arch bridge
2. Through Arch Bridge
- Deck below arch and supported by vertical hangers
- Arch supported at each end
3. Half-through Arch Bridge
- Ends of arch rib connected by ties
- Deck is primary support
A) arch rib:
main structure
carries the load
materials: reinforced concrete or steel
most aesthetic component of the bridge
new materials used: oncrete-filled steel tubular, high-performance concrete, steel concrete composites
B) Abutments/Supports/ Piers
carries most of the load transmitted from arch ribs
materials: reinforced concrete or steel
new materials used: cellular reinforced concrete and mass concrete (cheaper)
