Stimulus Control
Condition where a behavior occurs in the presence of certain stimuli but not in others.
Three-Term Contingency
The relationship between Antecedent, Behavior, and Consequence (A-B-C model).
Controlling Stimulus (S)
A stimulus that alters the probability of a specific operant behavior.
Discriminative Stimulus (SD)
A stimulus that precedes an operant and signals that reinforcement is available.
Extinction Stimulus (SΔ)
A stimulus that signals the absence of reinforcement for a behavior.
Establishing Operation (EO)
An antecedent event that increases the effectiveness of a reinforcer.
Abolishing Operation (AO)
An antecedent event that decreases the effectiveness of a reinforcer.
Prompting
Using antecedents to make a response more likely.
Fading
Gradually reducing the assistance provided to a learner.
Response Prompt
A behavior from a prompter that elicits the desired response from a learner.
Stimulus Prompt
Changing a stimulus to evoke a desired response from a learner.
Verbal Prompt
A spoken prompt given by another person to guide a learner.
Gestural Prompt
A physical gesture by someone that guides a learner's response.
Modeling Prompt
Demonstrating a behavior to show the learner how to perform it.
Physical Prompt
Direct assistance from a prompter to help a learner engage in a behavior.
Within-Stimulus Prompt
A change to aspects of the stimulus to aid discrimination.
Extrastimulus Prompt
Addition of a separate stimulus to enhance discrimination.
Transfer of Stimulus Control
Shifting response control from the SD plus prompt to the SD alone.
Prompt Fading
Gradual removal of prompts until no longer needed for a behavior.
Least-to-Most Prompting
Starting with the least intrusive prompt and increasing as necessary.
Most-to-Least Prompting
Starting with the most intrusive prompt and decreasing as necessary.
Prompt Delay
Waiting a moment before delivering a prompt to allow for unprompted response.
Stimulus Fading
Gradually reducing the stimulus prompt to encourage natural discrimination.
Antecedent Interventions
Manipulations of antecedent stimuli to increase desirable behaviors.
Motivating Operations (MO)
Antecedent events that alter the effectiveness of reinforcers.
Reinforcer
A consequence that increases the likelihood of a behavior occurring again.
Punisher
A consequence that decreases the likelihood of a behavior occurring again.
Desirable Behavior
A behavior that is favorable and reinforced.
Undesirable Behavior
A behavior that is unfavorable and often punished or extinguished.
Response Effort
The amount of effort required to engage in a behavior.
Behavior Chain
A sequence of behaviors, where earlier steps lead to later ones.
Environment Modification
Altering the surroundings to influence behavior.
Discrimination Training
Training that teaches differences between stimuli.
Evoking Behavior
The process by which an antecedent increases the likelihood of a behavior.
Behavior Probability
The likelihood of a behavior occurring under certain conditions.
Behavior Strengthening
Increasing the likelihood of a behavior by modifying consequences.
Behavior Weakening
Decreasing the likelihood of a behavior by applying consequences.
Cues
Reminders that help draw attention to discriminative stimuli.
