Computer Systems Servicing (CSS)
The field of maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and optimizing computer systems and networks.
Motherboard
A printed circuit board that serves as the foundation and communication hub of the system unit, allowing the CPU, RAM, and other components to function together.
Central Processing Unit (CPU)
Acts as the brain of the computer, processing all instructions so the system can work.
Random Access Memory (RAM)
Volatile memory that temporarily stores active data and instructions.
BIOS (Basic Input/Output System)
Firmware that initializes and tests hardware during the booting process.
UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface)
A modern firmware standard for starting and checking hardware during booting.
PCI / PCIe slots
Slots on the motherboard that allow for the installation of expansion cards to increase computer functionality.
Chipset
Coordinates data flow to and from key components on the motherboard.
Northbridge
The memory controller in older designs that links the CPU and RAM.
Southbridge
The I/O controller that handles slower peripheral communication.
IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics)
An older type of storage connector that uses ribbon cables.
SATA (Serial AT Attachment)
A common storage connector used in newer motherboards to link HDDs, SSDs, and optical drives.
Integrated Graphics Processing Unit (iGPU)
A low-powered graphics processor built into the same integrated heat spreader as the CPU that shares system RAM.
Discrete Graphics Processing Unit (dGPU)
A standalone graphics card or chip with its own dedicated memory (VRAM), separate from the CPU.
Network Interface Card (NIC)
A card or built-in part that connects a computer to a network.
Anti-static Wrist Strap
A tool used to protect computer parts from static electricity during handling.
Multimeter
A device used by technicians to check if electricity is working correctly.
Compressed Air
Used to clean computers by blowing away dust and debris.
Lint-Free Cloth
A cloth used to clean computer components without scratching them or leaving debris.
Cable Ties
Used to bundle cables neatly inside or outside a computer.
Phillips Screwdriver
A tool used to loosen or tighten crosshead screws.
Flat-head Screwdriver
A tool used to loosen or tighten slotted screws.
Torx Screwdriver
A specialized tool designed to work with star-like screw heads.
Needle-nose Pliers
Tools used for holding small parts in tight spaces.
Wire Cutter
A tool used to cut or strip wires.
Tweezers / Part retriever
Tools used to manipulate or retrieve small parts within the computer case.
IT Support
A role focused on helping users with technical issues, such as fixing non-working printers.
Computer Technician
A professional whose primary job is to fix broken computers.
Network Administrator
A professional responsible for ensuring that network systems, like Wi-Fi, work correctly.
System Analyst
A professional who studies how computers can work better within a system.
