If you must use positive punishment, combine it with a positive reinforcement to redirect
Negative Punishment
When a behavior is followed by removal of a positive stimulus
Parents taking away a console for bad grades
Should also be combined with positive reinforcement toward an incompatible behavior, such as rewards for going to bed on time when trying to negatively punish staying up too late.
