Abdominal
Pertaining to the abdomen, which is the part of the body located between the chest and pelvis.
abdomin/o = abdomen + -al = pertaining to → pertaining to the abdomen
Adenitis
Inflammation of a gland or glands.
aden/o = gland + -itis = inflammation → inflammation of a gland
Aerobic
Relating to or requiring free oxygen, often referring to processes that occur in the presence of oxygen, such as respiration or certain types of exercises.
aer/o = air or oxygen + -bic = pertaining to → using oxygen
Aguesia
Loss or alteration of the sense of taste.
a- = without + geus/o = taste + -ia = condition → condition without taste
Amylase
An enzyme that breaks down starches into sugars.
amyl/o = starch + -ase = enzyme → starch-digesting enzyme
Anaerobic
Relating to processes that occur in the absence of oxygen, often associated with fermentation or energy production without oxygen.
an- = without + aer/o = air/oxygen + -ic = pertaining to → without oxygen
Analgesia
Loss or absence of pain sensation without loss of consciousness.
an- = without + alges/o = pain + -ia = condition → condition without pain
Angiogram
A medical imaging technique used to visualize the inside of blood vessels and organs, typically achieved through the injection of a contrast agent.
angi/o = blood vessel + -gram = record/image → image of a blood vessel.
Antipyretic
A medication used to reduce fever.
anti- = against + pyret = fever → against fever.
Atherosclerosis
A condition where fatty deposits (plaques) build up inside the arteries, causing them to narrow and restrict blood flow.
Athero = fatty plaque + sclerosis = hardening → hardening/narrowing of arteries due to plaque buildup.
Arthritis
Inflammation of one or more joints, causing pain, swelling, or stiffness.
arthr/o = joint + -itis = inflammation → inflammation of a joint
Atrioventricular defect
An abnormal opening or problem between the heart’s atria and ventricles.
atri/o = atrium + ventricul/o = ventricle + defect = abnormality → abnormality involving the atria and ventricles
Bacteriocidal
Killing bacteria; a substance or treatment that kills bacteria.
bacteri/o = bacteria + -cidal = killing → bacteria-killing
Bacteriophage
A virus that infects and destroys bacteria.
bacteri/o = bacteria + -phage = eating/destroying → “bacteria eater”

Bradycardia
An abnormally slow heart rate.
brady- = slow + cardia = heart → slow heart rate.
Bronchitis
Inflammation of the bronchi, the air passages that carry air to and from the lungs.
bronch/o = bronchial tube + -itis = inflammation → inflammation of the bronchi.
Carcinoma
A cancerous tumor that develops from epithelial tissue (covers/lines surfaces of body such as skin, mouth, lungs, blood vessels and digestive tract)
carcin/o = cancer + -oma = tumor → cancerous tumor.
Cardiology
study of the heart and its diseases
cardi/o = heart + -logy = study of → study of the heart.
Chemotherapy
Treatment of a disease using chemical drugs, especially drugs used to treat cancer.
chem/o = drug or chemical + -therapy = treatment → treatment using drugs/chemicals.
Cholecystectomy
Surgical removal of the gallbladder.
cholecyst/o = gallbladder + -ectomy = surgical removal → removal of the gallbladder.
Cholecystitis
Inflammation of the gallbladder.
cholecyst/o = gallbladder + -itis = inflammation → gallbladder inflammation.
Colonoscopy
A procedure that uses a camera to examine the inside of the colon.
colon/o = colon + -scopy = visual examination → looking inside the colon.
Colostomy
surgical procedure that creates an opening from the colon to the outside of the body to allow stool to leave.
col/o = colon + -stomy = surgical opening → opening in the colon.
Craniology
The study of the skull, especially its shape and structure.
crani/o = skull + -logy = study of → study of the skull.
