Consciousness
A person's awareness of everything that is going on around him or her at any given moment.
Altered State of Consciousness
A condition significantly different from a normal waking beta wave state.
Circadian Rhythm
A cycle of bodily rhythm that occurs over a 24-hour period.
Adaptive Theory
Suggests that sleep/wake patterns evolved to avoid predators.
Restorative Theory
Proposes that sleep is vital for physical health and mental health.
Memory Consolidation
The process of sorting out memories and keeping them in a specific area of the cortex.
Sleep Deprivation
Any significant loss of sleep.
REM Sleep
A stage of sleep characterized by rapid eye movement and most associated with dreaming.
Non-REM Sleep
A restful stage of sleep without rapid eye movement.
REM Paralysis
The inability of the voluntary muscles to move during REM sleep.
Sleepwalking
Occurs during non-REM sleep; moving or walking around while asleep.
Insomnia
The inability to fall asleep, stay asleep, or get good quality sleep.
Narcolepsy
A sleep disorder characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness and sudden sleep attacks.
Sleep Apnea
A sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts.
Manifest Content of Dreams
The literal storyline of the dream.
Latent Content of Dreams
The hidden psychological meaning of the dreams.
