Genes are regions of DNA that store information as a sequence of DNA nucleotides (As, Cs, Gs, and Ts). During transcription, a copy of the information stored in a gene is made in the form of RNA (As, Cs, Gs, and Ts). Specific types of RNA called messenger RNAs (mRNAs) are then translated to make proteins. During translation, codons, which are triplets of RNA nucleotides, are "read" to determine what sequence of amino acids the protein should have.
