Four-Step Method of Instruction
An effective teaching model consisting of Preparation, Presentation, Application, and Evaluation used by company officers for training.
Step 1: Preparation
The phase where company officers gain a better understanding of subject matter to maintain credibility and present accurate information.
Step 2: Presentation
The phase where instruction methods must coincide with the needs of the students and the materials being taught to ensure adequate learning.
Step 3: Application
The opportunity for the company officer to demonstrate skills and ensure every crew member has the chance to perform the task appropriately.
Step 4: Evaluation
The phase where the company officer ensures personnel have met training objectives and determines if corrective measures or further lessons are needed.
AHJ
Authority Having Jurisdiction; their approval is required before attempting live-fire or other high-risk operational training exercises.
Safety
A planning factor that must always take precedence over realism to ensure students do not sustain injuries during training.
Justifications
Criteria the training must meet, including learning objectives, cost/benefit, legal requirements, positive community perception, and resource allotment.
NFPA 1403
The standard that recommends an instructor-to-student ratio of one-to-five (1:5) and provides safety requirements for live-fire training in acquired structures.
NFPA 1142
Standard on Water Supplies for Suburban and Rural Fire Fighting, used to calculate water supply quantities for training evolutions.
Resources/logistics
The planning factor ensuring to provide all items necessary for tasks, including apparatus, tools, extinguishing agents, food, water, and emergency medical resources.
Legal requirements
Considerations such as environmental laws, zoning, building and fire codes, and ownership that may limit or prohibit training evolutions.
NIMS-ICS
National Incident Management System-Incident Command System; the command structure that must be established and followed at all training evolutions.
Exposures
External factors at training locations such as wind-carried smoke and fire embers or water runoff that could contaminate drinking water.
Evaluations/critiques
Opportunities in lesson plans for officers and participants to address weaknesses and determine the effectiveness of teaching and supervision.
