Protoplasmic Grade of Organization
A type of organismal organization wherein all life functions are confined within the boundaries of a single cell, such as in Paramecium.
Cephalization
The differentiation of a head end, involving the concentration of nervous tissue and sense organs, which bestows an advantage when moving through an environment head first.
Frontal Plane
A plane that divides a bilateral body into dorsal and ventral halves by running through the anterior-posterior axis and the right-left axis at right angles to the sagittal plane.
Metamerism
A common feature of metazoans characterized by the serial repetition of body segments along the longitudinal axis of the body, also called segmentation.
Simple Columnar Epithelium
A single layer of cells that are taller than cuboidal with elongate nuclei, used mainly for increased absorption along the intestines.
Chondrocytes
Firm matrix cells that compose cartilage, a semi-rigid tissue containing collagen and elastin that lacks its own blood supply.
Binomial Nomenclature
Carolus Linnaeus's system for naming species using two Latinized words: a capitalized genus noun and a lowercase species epithet.
Phagotrophs
Holozoic feeders that obtain particulate food through phagocytosis via infolding or invagination of the plasma membrane.
Undulipodia
The collective term for cilia and flagella, which feature 9 pairs of longitudinal microtubules arranged in a circle around a central pair within an axoneme.
Lobopodia
Large, blunt pseudopodial extensions of the cell body containing both endoplasm and ectoplasm, observed in amoebas like Difflugia, Amoeba, and Arcella.
Hydrogenosomes
Organelles in unicellular eukaryotes lacking mitochondria that perform a respiratory function in the absence of oxygen.
Conjugation
The temporary union of two unicellular individuals to exchange chromosomal material, during which the macronucleus disintegrates and micronuclei undergo meiosis.
Choanocytes
Specialized flagellated cells in sponges that filter water and assist in generating water currents through the body.
Gemmules
Internal buds produced by sponges containing totipotent archaeocytes encased in spicules and spongin, capable of surviving dormant in harsh conditions.
Leuconoid Body Plan
The most complex sponge body type, where incurrent canals lead to collections of choanocyte chambers and exit through excurrent canals.
Cnidocytes
Specialized cells in cnidarian tentacles containing fluid-filled intracellular capsules called cnidae or nematocysts used for prey capture and defense.
Velum
A shelf-like fold of tissue on the inner bottom margin of the bell in hydromedusae that increases water velocity for efficient swimming.
Syncytial Tegument
The non-ciliated body covering, also known as neodermis, characteristic of adult parasitic flatworms in which many nuclei are enclosed within a single membrane.
Flame Cells
Specialized excretory or osmoregulatory cells in flatworm protonephridia that contain beating cilia resembling a flickering flame.
Miracidium
The free-swimming larva that hatches from a trematode egg, discards its ciliated epithelium, and penetrates its first intermediate host.
Opisthaptor
A complex posterior attachment organ found in class Monogenea equipped with hooks, suckers, or clamps to anchor to host gills or skin.
Scolex
The anterior attachment structure of a tapeworm equipped with suckers or hooks to anchor into the host's intestinal wall.
Clitellum
A ring of secretory epidermal cells present in class Clitellata used to produce a mucous tube and tough cocoon during reproduction.
Typhlosole
A dorsal infolding of the intestinal wall in earthworms that increases the surface area for digestion and absorption.
Chloragogen
A layer of yellowish cells surrounding the intestine and dorsal vessel of earthworms that serves as a center for glycogen and fat synthesis.
Eutely
A condition in nematodes and certain other animals characterized by a constant, fixed number of cells or pattern of cell division.
Amphids
Complex paired sensory organs located on each side of the head in nematodes that open via cuticular pits containing modified cilia.
Synapsid Skull
A vertebrate skull characterized by a single pair of temporal openings located low in the cheeks, from which mammals evolved.
Amnion
An extraembryonic membrane in amniotes that encloses the embryo in a fluid-filled space to cushion it and provide an aqueous medium for growth.
Heterodont Dentition
A mammalian tooth arrangement featuring specialized teeth differentiated into incisors, canines, premolars, and molars for cutting, tearing, piercing, and grinding.
Vibrissae
Specialized tactile sensory hairs commonly known as whiskers found on nocturnal and burrowing mammals.
Rumen
The first stomach chamber in ruminants where swallowed plant food is initially digested by microbes to form a cud before regurgitation.
Kinetic Skull
A skull with movable joints found in snakes and lizards that allows the jaws to spread apart and accommodate large prey.
Pit Organs
Infrared radiation heat receptors in certain snakes that track prey and enable accurate strikes in darkness.
Plastron
The ventral portion of a turtle shell, composed of an outer horny layer of keratin and an inner layer of bone.
