What is a cell?
The smallest unit of organisation in living things.
What is a biological kingdom?
The way science classifies living things based on ancestry over the course of evolution.
What does an ecosystem consist of?
Interactions of organisms in a specific area with each other and their non-living environment.
What is a habitat?
Where an organism lives.
What is a population?
A group of organisms in a specific area of the same species.
What is a community?
All of the living organisms that live in a specific area.
What is adaptation in biology?
A feature or trait that helps an organism survive in its habitat.
What does a food chain illustrate?
The flow of energy between organisms in a habitat.
What is biodiversity?
The variety of plant and animal life in the world or in a particular habitat.
Define the term endemic.
A species that is only found in a particular place.
What is the difference between native and endemic species?
Native species are originally from a particular place but can be found in other areas, while endemic species are only found in one location.
What does it mean if a species is extinct?
There are no more individuals of the species left in existence.
What is deforestation?
The removal of forested areas.
What is competition in an ecological context?
When species are fighting for resources such as food and space.
What is the cell theory?
All living things are made up of 1 or more cells, and all cells come from pre-existing cells.
What are the 7 life processes (Mrs Gren)?
Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion, Nutrition.
What role does the cell membrane play in a cell?
It transports material in and out of the cell.
What are the five biological kingdoms?
Animalia, Plantae, Fungi, Protista, Monera/Prokaryote.
What do producers do in a food chain?
They manufacture food by utilizing energy from the sun.
What is the significance of the ~10% energy transfer in food chains?
Only ~10% of energy is transferred to consumers at each trophic level, leading to smaller energy transfers as you move up.
