What is chemistry?
The study of particles that make up matter and the changes that the particles can undergo.
Matter
Any substance that has mass and occupies space.
Five branches of chemistry
Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, and Biochemistry.
Analytical Chemistry
The branch of chemistry that investigates what substances are made of by analyzing compositions.
Physical Chemistry
The branch that studies the relationship between physics and chemistry, focusing on the physical properties of chemical systems.
Organic Chemistry
The study of compounds that contain carbon.
Inorganic Chemistry
The study of substances that do not contain carbon.
Biochemistry
The study of chemical processes in living organisms, focusing on metabolic reactions.
Importance of chemistry
Chemistry is involved in various applications including extraction of materials, water treatment, environmental protection, and cooking.
Lab safety rule: Do not eat or drink
It is essential to maintain a safe laboratory environment by not consuming food or beverages.
Mixing acids and water
When mixing acids and water, always add acid to water, not the other way around.
Boiling point
The temperature at which a substance changes from a liquid to a gas; important in fractionating mixtures.
