Heart Failure (HF)
-inability of cardiac input to keep pace with body's demands for supplies & removal of wastes
-systolic HF and diastolic HF
2 Main Causes of Systolic HF
1) damage fo heart muscle from heart attack or bad circulation to heart
2) prolonged pumping against chronically increased afterload
Congestive HF (CHF)
-blood continues to clog up venous system
-can be forward or backward
Forward Failure
-heart fails to pump enough blood forward to tissues
-due to SV becoming smaller
Backward Failure or Congestive HF
-occurs with Forward Failure and blood can't pump out all blood returned to it
Pulmonary Edema
-excess tissue fluid in lungs
-caused by backward failure
-blood dams up lungs
-reduces O2 and CO2 exchange
Diastolic HF or Heart Failure with Preserved EF
-blood pumps all blood out, but does not fill enough before it contracts
-has forward and backawrd
