Dorsiflexion
Movement of the top of the ankle and foot toward the anterior tibia.
Plantar flexion
Movement of the ankle and foot away from the tibia.
Inversion
Turning the ankle and foot inward; adduction toward the midline.
Eversion
Turning the ankle and foot outward; abduction away from the midline.
Pronation
Combination of ankle dorsiflexion, subtalar eversion, and forefoot abduction (toe-out).
Supination
Combination of ankle plantar flexion, subtalar inversion, and forefoot adduction (toe-in).
Talocrural joint
Hinge or ginglymus-type joint formed by the talus, distal tibia, and distal fibula.
Syndesmosis
A type of fibrous joint where bones are connected by a ligament, allowing minimal movement.
Achilles tendon
The tendon connecting the calf muscles to the heel bone, involved in plantar flexion.
Plantar fasciitis
A common painful condition involving the plantar fascia that stabilizes the medial longitudinal arch.
Compartment Syndrome
A painful condition due to increased pressure within a muscle compartment, often requiring surgical intervention.
Tibialis anterior
A muscle responsible for dorsiflexion and inversion of the foot.
Peroneus longus
A muscle involved in eversion and plantar flexion of the foot.
Intrinsics of the foot
Muscles originating and inserting within the foot, responsible for toe movements.
Medial longitudinal arch
The arch extending from the calcaneus to the medial aspects of the foot.
Lateral longitudinal arch
The arch extending from the calcaneus to the lateral aspects of the foot.
Transverse arch
The arch extending across the foot from the 1st to the 5th metatarsal.
Metatarsophalangeal joint
Joint where the phalanges meet the metatarsals, allowing for flexion and extension of the toes.
