1. create margin/boundaries with work so that there is more space to allow worship to be most important thing in life
2. need to reorient our lives so that worship flows through our work instead of getting pushed aside

- create service based on scripture -> adapt to culture of community
- catering = potentially lose body of Christ
- we don't do things for the wants of people -> we adapt to reach the needs
Veith Problem: Open Up vs Close Down
- Open up = keeping / adding things to service for the betterment of those there
- Close down = take away to fit wants of community (could be more problematic)
Emotional Approach to Selection
a song is good if it is enjoyed by those who sing it, if it makes them feel energized/excited/emotionally touched in some way
Evangelistic Approach to Selection
a song is good if it fill the church and helps to spread the gospel by attracting people to worship and evagelistic events
Aesthetic Approach to Selection
a song is good if it meets artistic (poetic and musical) criteria of quality, that is, if it can be seen as work of art
Theological Approach to Selection
a song is good if its text meet high theological criteria of quality and has proclamatory value (hymns)
Traditional Approach to Selection
a song is good if it has been sung for a long time and has shown it can stand the test of time
Personal Meaning Approach to Selection
a song is good if it has had meaning in a person's life and people have strong personal memories associated with it (like a good friend)
Integrated Approach to Selection
a song is good if it makes connections between words and music, people and theology, emotion, and many other polarities
Good Text Evaluator of Music
- needs to be theologically sound (beware of misleading theology)
- takes human experience seriously
- readily understood -> simple, repetitive NOT shallow
- memorable poetic value

- singable by anyone
- does not depend on accompaniment

- creates balance between easy and familiar and interesting

2. invention of tradition (created not discovered infusion of new traditions)
3. identity formation (what you were brought up on -> focuses on individual)
