Benjamin Franklin

Among the most famous of the Founding Fathers and played a key role in the Revolutionary War. Was an ardent believer in the need for the colonies to unite against British rule. Printed what is thought to be the first American political cartoon in his newspaper, the Pennsylvania Gazette. The cartoon, called “Join or Die,” depicted a serpent that had been cut into pieces, each representing a colony. “Join or Die” became a symbol of the Revolution.

Middle Colonies

Included New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. Some of this land was originally held by the Dutch, but by the 1660s, this region was under British control. Are known for being the most diverse due to the migration of people from different parts of the world.

Established as a place where Quakers could have freedom of worship.

Philadelphia

Named the city of “brotherly love” to symbolize the city’s values of toleration and opportunity.

Belief that the political power of a nation or state comes from the consent of the people.

Proprietary Colony

A type of British colony in North America in the 1600s which came about when the king gave large amounts of land to an individual

A person to whom the King of England granted land in North America in the late 1600s.

Refers to the relationship that people have with anything that they consider holy or spiritual, such as their god or gods. Includes their beliefs about their god, the ways they choose to worship that god, other actions they perform to express their faith, and the values that they hold because of their beliefs.

An English Quaker who founded Pennsylvania, promoted religious toleration, and made friends with the Lenape Indians.
