Religious utopian communities
Idealistic communities formed to create a perfect, faith-based society. A prominent example is Mormonism
Joseph Smith, Brigham Young and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints
Joseph Smith founded the church in the 1830s. After his murder, Brigham Young led the Mormon followers west to establish a thriving community in Utah.
Secular utopian societies
Non-religious communities that sought to create ideal societies based on principles of cooperation and social harmony. Examples include Brook Farm (a transcendentalist community) and Robert Owen's New Harmony (a socialist community).
The Temperance Movement
A major social reform effort to curb or eliminate the consumption of alcoholic beverages.
Lyman Beecher
A prominent minister who was a key leader of the movement.

Washington Temperance Society
An organization founded by recovering alcoholics that focused on personal stories and mutual support to encourage sobriety.

A colony established on the west coast of Africa by the ACS, which became an independent nation in 1847.
David Walker
A free Black abolitionist whose 1829 Appeal to the Coloured Citizens of the World called for an immediate end to slavery and urged Black people to resist oppression, by force if necessary.
