What three things do plants use in photosynthesis?
Water, carbon dioxide, and energy from sunlight.
What is the equation for how plants make food (photosynthesis)?
Water + Carbon Dioxide -> Glucose + Oxygen
What captures the energy in sunlight?
Chlorophyll
Why is photosynthesis important?
Provides energy for all other organisms and provides oxygen for the Earth's atmosphere.
Where does photosynthesis take place?
In chloroplasts, inside plant cells.
What do carbon dioxide and water produce during photosynthesis?
Carbohydrates and oxygen
How does carbon dioxide enter the leaf?
Through tiny holes in the leaf called stomata.
Why do farmers add fertiliser to their fields?
To make the crops grow larger and produce a higher yield, because fertilisers contain minerals that plants need.
Name two important minerals for plants.
Magnesium and nitrate.
Why do plants need magnesium?
To make chlorophyll.
What happens if a plant lacks magnesium?
The leaves grow yellow, and it cannot photosynthesise efficiently.
Why do plants need nitrate?
To convert carbohydrates to proteins
What happens if a plant lacks nitrogen?
Leaves die and the plants stay small.
