List of Disaccharides:
Maltose, sucrose, lactose
Pentose sugars:
Ribose, Deoxyribose
Hexose sugars:
Glucose, Fructose, Galactose
Difference between Amylose and Amylopectin (both starches)
Amylose is unbranched, and coiled, and contains only 1-4 glycosidic bonds. Amylopectin is branched and contains both 1-4 and 1-6 bonds.
What is a benefit to a polysaccharide being more branched?
Enzymes can more easily hydrolyse the glycosidic bonds and use for respiration
Benefit of starch being insoluble:
Doesn’t affect water balance
Difference between Alpha and Beta Glucose:
Alpha glucose has the hydroxyl group below whereas Beta has the hydroxyl group above.
Three types of polysaccharides:
Starch ( Amylose and Amylopectin )
Glycogen
Cellulose
Which bonds do Amylopectin and Glycogen contain which Amylose and cellulose do not?
1-6 Glycosidic bonds
