* USPD → Socialist Party
* SPD → Social Democrats, Friedrich Ebert, initially held power

Centrist Parties

* DDP → Democratic Party, liberals, in most coalition governments


* Zentrum → Catholic Centre Party, centrist, catholic, in most coalitions, around since 1870
* DVP → centre-right, industry, Christian family values, Gustav Stresemann

Right-Wing Parties

* DNVP → combined old conservative groups, rejected ToV + Weimar, 1919, monarchists


* NSDAP → Nazis, 1919, Munich Putsch 1923, re-established 1925, Hitler, authoritarian

* National Socialist German Workers’ Party i.e. Nazi Party


* Formed in Feb. 1920, led by Adolf Hitler
* racism, antisemitism, ultra-nationalism, anticommunism, authoritarianism

* Attempt to seize power using Sturmabteilung/SA 
* Crushed by Munich police when people don’t support them
* Hitler arrested + sensational trial conducted + sentenced to 5 years

Chancellor Stresemann

* DVP
* Negotiated loans with America + exit of France from Ruhr(Dawes Plan)


* Introduced new currency(Rentenmark) 1923

Weimar Culture

* 1924-1929, German culture had a renaissance


* for the young progressives in the cities
* photo-montages, Otto Dix, George Grosz, Bertolt Brecht, Bauhaus, Walter Gropius, theatre + music + dance, US influence
