Periodic Table
A table that organizes elements by increasing atomic number and similar chemical properties.
Atomic Number
The number of protons in the nucleus of an element.
Periods
Horizontal rows in the periodic table, numbered 1 through 7.
Groups or Families
Vertical columns in the periodic table that represent elements with similar chemical properties.
Main Group Elements
Elements in the two main blocks of the periodic table, representing a range of chemical activity.
Metalloids
Elements that have intermediate properties between metals and nonmetals, located along the metalloid line.
Alkali Metals
Group 1A elements, excluding hydrogen, known for being highly reactive.
Alkaline Earth Metals
Group 2A elements, known for being less reactive than alkali metals.
Halogens
Group 7A elements, known for being very reactive nonmetals.
Noble Gases
Group 8A elements, known for being chemically inert and existing as gaseous atoms.
Transition Metals
Elements in the central block of the periodic table known for their ability to form various oxidation states.
Inner Transition Metals
Elements in the bottom two rows of the periodic table, including lanthanides and actinides.
