Opposites
Two numbers that are the same distance from 0 on a number line, but in opposite directions. (ex. 3 and -3 are opposites).
Integers
The set of positive whole numbers, their opposites, and 0.
Absolute value
The distance between a number and zero on a number line. The absolute value of a is written as |a|. (ex. |-8| = 8, |12|=12).
Coordinate plane
Formed by a horizontal number line called the x-axis and a vertical number line called they y-axis.
Ordered pair
Identifies the location of a point in the coordinate plane. The x-coordinate shows a point's position left or right of the y-axis. The y-coordinate shows a point's position up or down from the x-axis.
Origin
The point of intersection of the x and y-axes on a coordinate plane. The ordered pair (or address) of the origin is (0,0).
x-axis
The horizontal number line that, together with the y-axis forms the coordinate plane.
y-axis
The vertical number line that, together with the x-axis forms the coordinate plane.
Quadrant
The x and y-axes divide the coordinate plane into four regions called quadrants. The quadrants are numbered counter clockwise starting in the top right quadrant with number 1.
x-coordinate
The first number in an ordered pair. It tells the number of horizontal units a point is from 0. (ex. In the ordered pair (2, 7), 2 is the x-coordinate.)
y-coordinate
The second number in an ordered pair. It tells the number of vertical units a point is from 0. (ex. In the ordered pair (2, 7), 7 is the y-coordinate.)
Transformation
A change in position, shape, or size of a figure. Three types of transformations that change position only are translations, reflections, and rotations.
Reflection
A transformation that flips a figure across (over) a line of reflection.
Line of reflection
A line across which a figure is reflected.
Image
The result of a transformation of a point, line, or figure.
