6 Rights of Medication Administration
The six rights include the right dose, medication, patient, time, route, and documentation.
Infiltration
Condition where fluid diffuses into surrounding tissues, potentially causing pain and swelling.
Extravasation
Condition where fluid leaks outside the vessel, which can be painful and dangerous.
Parenteral Route
Method of medication administration that involves injections directly into the body, bypassing the gastrointestinal tract.
Enteral Route
Administration of medication directly into the gastrointestinal tract via oral or rectal methods.
Standing Orders
Written directions for specific medications or procedures signed by a physician for use under specified conditions.
Vial
A closed system container from which medication is drawn, requiring the injection of air for fluid removal.
Ampule
A glass container with a narrow neck, opened by breaking the glass to access the medication inside.
Documentation Requirements for Medications
Includes date, time of day, drug name, dosage, route of administration, and administrator's identifier.
Administration Techniques for IV
Includes the 'Piggyback' method through an intermittent injection port or direct IV injection.
Emergency Response to Infiltration
Stop the injection immediately, maintain pressure at the site, and apply hot or cold compress based on the type of drug.
Flushing an IV Line
process of injecting saline through an IV line to ensure the medication is delivered correctly.
