Anatomical Neutral
The reference position of the human body where a person is standing upright with arms down at sides and palms facing forwards.
Superior
A position higher in the vertical direction in reference to another structure.
Inferior
A position lower in vertical direction in reference to another structure.
Anterior
A position more toward the front of the body in reference to another structure.
Posterior
A position more toward the back of the body in reference to another structure.
Medial
Closer to the midline or middle of the body.
Lateral
Further away from the midline or middle of the body.
Proximal
A position closer to the midline in reference to another structure.
Distal
A position further form the midline in reference to another structure.
Superficial
A position closer to the midline in reference to another structure.
Deep
A position further form the midline in reference to another structure.
Sagittal Plane
An anatomical plane that separates the body into right and left sections.
Frontal Plane
An anatomical plane that separates the body into front and back sections.
Transverse/Horizontal Plane
An anatomical plane that separates the body into top and bottom sections.
Bilateral/Frontal Axis
An axis that corresponds with the sagittal plane and passes from R-L or L-R.
Anterio-Posterior/Sagittal Axis
An axis that corresponds with the frontal plane and passes from front-back or back-front.
Polar/Longitudinal Axis
An axis that corresponds with the transverse plane and passes from top-bottom or bottom-top.
Origin
The traditional term used to refer to the attachment site of a muscle that does not move.
Insertion
The traditional term used to refer to the attachment site of a muscle that does move.
Agonist
The muscle(s) primarily responsible for the joint action.
Antagonist
The muscle(s) that perform the opposite joint action of the agonist.
Concentric Contraction
A muscle contraction type that CAUSES motion against gravity or resistance.
Eccentric Contraction
A muscle contraction type that CONTROLS motion against gravity or resistance.
Isometric Contraction
A muscle contraction type that RESISTS change against gravity or resistance.
Prep Phase
The movements that prepare the person to perform the motion.
Action Phase
The movements that are performed to execute the motion.
Follow-through Phase
The movements that are performed to complete the motion.
Broad Jump Prep Phase
The movement phase starting standing upright and ending at max knee bend/flexion, involving knee flexion, arm swing, and weight transfer.
Broad Jump Action Phase
The movement phase starting at max knee bend/flexion and ending at foot contact, involving forward arm swing, knee extension, and ankle plantarflexion.
Broad Jump Follow-through Phase
The movement phase starting at foot contact and ending standing upright, involving bringing the body over the feet, arms back to the body, and knees bending and straightening after landing.
