A period accompanied by cholera and typhus that resulted in the death of 400,000 people.
Siberia
The location where Russian peasants were often sent for exile as a form of harsh punishment.
Nicholas II
The autocratic and ineffective ruler of 1/5 of the earth's land surface who was often more interested in his family and hobbies than ruling.
Nicholas II's 1916 Wealth
Valued at up to US 881 million, which equals more than US 1.5 trillion today, making him the wealthiest monarch in history.
World War I Casualties
By 1916, the number of Russian casualties had reached 2 million.
Alexandra
The wife of Nicholas II who was left in charge of the government during WWI; she was publically distrusted and accused of spying for Germany.
Rasputin
The advisor to Alexandra who was given almost unlimited authority by 1916 and was later murdered through poisoning, shooting, and drowning.
Alexander III
A ruler who clung to autocracy and used strict censorship and pogroms to suppress anyone who questioned his authority.
Dangerous People
Under Alexander III, this term referred to anyone who questioned his authority, was not Russian Orthodox, or did not speak Russian.
Bloody Sunday
An event during the Revolution of 1905 where soldiers fired on a crowd of 200,000 unarmed workers marching to the Winter Palace.
Neva River
The icy body of water where Rasputin's body was thrown after he was clubbed and shot.
Russo-Japanese War (1904-05)
A conflict over Korea where Japan destroyed the Russian navy, leading to humiliation and increased unpopularity for the Czar.
Winter Palace Petition
A document carried by workers in 1905 demanding better living and working conditions, an end to wars, and the establishment of a parliament.
1890 Military Fitness Statistic
The year in which 64 % of peasants called up for military service were declared unfit.
