protects internal organs, regulates temp, prevents water loss, relays sensory info

What are the 3 layers of skin?

epidermis, dermis, subcutaneous layer (hypodermis)

Epidermis

outermost layer, waterproof barrier, contains melanocytes, no blood vessels

Dermis

middle layer, contains collagen, blood vessels, hair follicles, nerve endings and all glands

Subcutaneous layer (hypodermis)

deepest layer, connects skin to underlying muscles and bone

Where are all skin glands found?

in the dermis

Sebaceous gland

secrete sebum onto hair

Sudoriferous glands

umbrella term for sweat glands

Eccrine sweat glands

secrete sweat, regulates body temp

Apocrine sweat glands

associated with hair follicles, has odor

Ceruminous glands

produces ear wax only found in the ear canal dermis
