Satellite cells
Specialized stem cells located in skeletal muscle that play a crucial role in muscle repair, regeneration, and adaptation; donate new nuclei when needed
Epimysium
The connective tissue that surrounds the entire muscle
Perimysium
The connective tissue that surrounds bundles of muscle fibers (fascicles)
Endomysium
Surrounds individual muscle fibers
Sarcolemma
The cell membrane surrounding a skeletal muscle fiber
Sarcoplasm
The cytoplasm of a muscle cell that contains proteins, organelles, and myofibrils
Sarcomere
Repeating contractile unit of a myofibril
Sarcoplasmic reticulum
Network of channels surrounding and running perpendicular to each myofibril; storage sites for calcium
Transverse tubules
Extend from sarcolemma to sarcoplasmic reticulum; spreads action potential from outer membrane inward to deeper cell region
Terminal cisterna
Portion of SR near t-tubules that contains the Ca+
Myofibrils
Threadlike structures which make up a muscle fiber
Myosin
Thick protein filaments. Contain cross-bridges that have high affinity for actin
Actin
Major component of thin protein filaments
ok
Be able to write out the 10 ish stages of muscle excitation, contraction, and relaxation (answer: ok)
