-Theravada belief
-human personality is made up of five skandhas (aggregates)
-Form (physical substance
-Sensation (eg. from our senses)
-Perception (understanding of sensations)
-Mental formations (eg. will belief, desire
-Consciousness (awareness of world and self)
-the five things interact and vary - there is no consistent soul
beneath them
Describe (Mahayana) beliefs about human personality
-everyone has a Buddha -nature (tathagatagharba)
-everyone has the ability to become a Buddha for themselves, not just monks
Sunyata: ‘emptiness’ - everything, both beings and objects, lack a true essence
-‘Form is only emptiness’ - Heart Sutra
-understanding this is vital, as clinging to the idea of people/things having a substance can result in forming attachments, and so moving further from enlightenment
Describe the differences between Theravada and Mahayana Buddhism
-Theravada is the oldest and most traditional branch of Buddhism, it is stricter and puts more emphasis on monasticism
-Mahayana is less traditional and more internally diverse - includes Zen, Tibetan and Pure Land Buddhism
