textiles’ performance categories, as they relate to serviceability for consumers:
aesthetics, comfort, durability, appearance retention, care, cost, sustainability
aesthetics
appearance or attractiveness
categories under aesthetics
luster, texture, hand, drape, cover, motif, color
luster:
the way light is reflected
texture:
the nature of a fabric’s surface
hand:
the way a fabric feels to the skin
drape:
the way a fabric hangs
cover:
the degree to which a fabric is opaque or translucent (see through)
motif:
or pattern
definition of comfort
if a fabric is comfortable when worn under different environmental conditions and degrees of physical activity
categories under comfort:
absorbency (water), heat retention, electrical conductivity (static)
absorbency:
the ability of a fabric’s fiber to take up moisture from the body or from the environment
high absorbency
takes up moisture easily / Slower drying
low absorbency
does not take up moisture easily / Faster drying
electrical conductivity:
the degree to which a fabric can conduct (i.e transfer) electrical charges
low conductivity =
electrostatic charged = static cling
high conductivity =
no electrostatic charges = no static cling
heat retention:
the ability of a fabric to hold heat OR conduct heat (transfer through)
heat retention comfort =
high retention in cold weather, low retention in hot weather
durability:
how a product withstands use
abrasion resistance:
withstand rubbing, folding
tensile strength:
withstand pulling
appearance retention:
how well a fabric maintains it original appearance after use and care
resiliency:
can it return back to its shape after crushing/bending/ twisting? other words, does it wrinkle?
high resiliency means
does not wrinkle easily or stay wrinkled
low resiliency means:
it wrinkles easily and stay wrinkled
elastic recovery:
can it return back to its shape after it’s been stretched?
dimensional stability:
does it maintain its shape through care (washing?)
care:
treatment required to maintain a fabric’s original appearance and cleanliness
cost:
amount paid to acquire and maintain a product
environmental impact:
effect of production, use, care, and disposal of textiles on environment
