The Legend

A guide identifying patterns, symbols, or colors used on a map

scale

the relationship between distance on the map and distance on Earth, can be verbal (words), number (ratio/fraction) or, most commonly, graphic (divided bar)

Latitude

distance north or south of the Equator, measured in degrees

Longitude

Distance east or west of the prime meridian, measured in degrees

orientation

North arrow indicated where north lies on the map, alongside compass rose.

Where the information used to make the map was obtained

Geography

The study of the Earth, comes from the words Geo (the Earth) and Graphos (to record/to write/to draw).

Types of Geography

Physical (eg; mountains, rivers, forests, climate) and Human (Culture, Politics). Also there are the tools of Geography (GPS, satellite imaging)

Time Zones

one of the 24 regions or divisions of the globe approximately corresponding with meridians (lines of Longitude).

From West to East; Pacific (eg. 11:00), Mountain (eg. 12:00), Central (eg. 1:00), Eastern (eg. 2:00), Atlantic (eg. 3:00), Newfoundland (eg. 3:30).
