arranged in order where that increases the importance of the sentence "a bird, a plane, its superman!"
Euphemism
An indirect, less offensive way of saying something that is considered unpleasant "small? no, cozy home!"
extended metaphor
A series of comparisons between two unlike objects. "aint nothing but a groundhog, cryin all the time"
fragment
dont have to clear up or explain " bc I said so"
Inversion
purposely putting words in a non-traditional order "Hear you nothing that i say?"
juxaposition
placement of two things side by side for emphasis "i was sun, he was rain"
irony
the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect.
motif
A recurring theme, subject or idea
negation
the opposite of the original statement "i was no Christmas dinner"
oxymoron
A figure of speech that combines opposite terms in a brief phrase. "skyrocket downward"
parallelism
similar words to emphasize similar ideas in a sentence "she wears shorts skirts, i wear t-shirts"
polysyndeton
use of many conjunctions " the lived (and) laughed (and) loved"
tricolon
three parallel words to construct the same pattern " be nice, kind, and thoughtful"
zeugma
a figure of speech in which a word applies to two others in different sense " she broke his heart and his car"
passive voice
The subject of the sentence receives the action. " mistakes were made"
