Who was Herophilus, and what were his key contributions to anatomy?
Herophilus (335–280 BCE) of Alexandria is known as 'The Father of Anatomy.' He performed the first recorded systematic human dissections and distinguished and identified the brain, nerves, and blood vessels.
Who was Andreas Vesalius, and how did he impact the study of human anatomy?
Andreas Vesalius (1514–1564 CE) is recognized as the 'Founder of Modern Anatomy.' He systematically corrected long-standing anatomical errors from Galen and advocated for direct human dissection as primary proof.
How does 'Dead' Anatomy differ from 'Functional' Anatomy?
'Dead' Anatomy focuses on structural dissection in deceased subjects, analyzing isolated structures and tracing fiber origins/insertions. 'Functional' Anatomy evaluates dynamic systems in living subjects using real-time visualization (like EMG and ultrasound) to observe whole-body integration and dynamic movement.
What is the traditional 'dead' action of the rotator cuff group versus its functional role?
In isolated 'dead' anatomy, the rotator cuff is defined by external rotation (open-chain movement). Functionally, it decelerates a baseball pitch and maintains the stability of the shoulder girdle during dynamic movement.

What is a tendon and what is its primary function?

What is a ligament and what is its primary function?
A ligament connects bone to bone. Made of collagen fibers linked to the fascial network, it functions to reinforce joint stability.
What are the two types of fascia and their respective functions?
Superficial Fascia is located in the subcutaneous layer and allows skin to move freely over underlying muscles. Deep Fascia is a dense, organized layer that envelops muscles, bones, nerves, and vessels, forming intermuscular septa and muscle compartments to provide structural integrity.
What is a retinaculum?
A retinaculum consists of specialized ligaments whose function is not specifically to hold bones together, but to keep tendons in place.
What role do bursae play in the musculoskeletal system?
Bursae act as the 'furniture gliders' and 'airbags' of the musculoskeletal system, reducing friction and cushioning movement between structures.

Superficial refers to structures easily visible near the surface without moving much tissue (e.g., Pectoralis Major). Deep refers to structures only visible once overlying tissue obstructions are removed (e.g., Pectoralis Minor).
How is the skeletal system divided, and what percentage of total body weight does bone represent?
The skeletal system is divided into the Axial skeleton (cranium, vertebral column, ribs, sternum, hyoid bone) and the Appendicular skeleton (arms, legs, shoulder girdle, pelvic girdle). Bone is as strong as steel pound for pound and makes up 15% of body weight.

This is a Ball and Socket joint (such as the Glenohumeral Joint), which allows movement in every plane.

This is a Pivot Joint (such as the Atlantoaxial joint), which allows one bone to rotate on another.
What are Gliding Joints, and where are they located?
Gliding Joints are the least mobile joints in the body, found between the Carpals and Tarsals.
What five features of a muscle can be inferred from its name?
A muscle's name can give clues to its shape (e.g., rhomboid), location (e.g., temporalis), fiber direction (e.g., obliques), action (e.g., adductor brevis), and attachment sites (e.g., sternocleidomastoid).
How do muscle origins and insertions typically differ?
The origin of a muscle is typically more stationary, whereas the insertion is more mobile. Both attach to bones via tendons.
How strong is an individual muscle fiber relative to its size?
A single muscle fiber is thinner than a human hair, but it can support up to 1,000 times its own weight.
What major nerve junctions (plexuses) exist in the body, and how are CNS/PNS and Somatic/Autonomic defined?
Major nerve junctions include the Cervical, Brachial, Lumbar, and Sacral plexuses. CNS vs PNS represents Central Command versus messengers, while Somatic vs Autonomic represents conscious control versus unconscious control.
