Stress
The nonspecific response of the holistic person to any demand.
Stressor
A stimulus that precedes and elicits stress.
Eustress
A stimulus/stressor that is perceived as enjoyable or welcomed.
Distress
A stimulus/stressor that is perceived as unwelcome and threatens a person's ability to cope.
Adaptive Potential
The ability to mobilize self-care resources to adapt and cope effectively with stressors.
APAM (Adaptive Potential Assessment Model)
Identifies states of coping that reflect an individual’s potential to mobilize self-care resources.
Holistic Self-Care Actions
Actions that are intended to maintain or improve one’s overall health using a holistic approach.
Coping
The process of contending with stressors, which can be adaptive or maladaptive.
Equilibrium
A state where normal vital signs are present, tension is low, and resources are effectively mobilized.
Impoverishment
A state with diminished resources where managing ongoing stress is difficult, characterized by tension and fatigue.
Adaptive Equilibrium
A health-directed state marked by normal vital signs and positive expectations.
Maladaptive Equilibrium
A stress state where tension and anxiety exist without fatigue or depression, utilizing resources ineffectively.
Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs
A theory proposing five levels of human needs, from basic physiological needs to self-actualization.
Self-Care Resources
Internal and external resources that assist individuals in coping with stressors.
Basic-Need Satisfaction
The fulfillment of essential human needs that support health and adaptability.
