What is a Molecule?
A group of two or more atoms that are held together by chemical bonds forming the smallest unit of a substance that retains its properties.
What is DNA?
A molecule inside cells that holds the genetic instructions for an organism.
What is a Gene Sequence?
The specific order of the building blocks (called nucleotides) that make up a gene, essentially the 'code' written in DNA that tells a cell how to build a particular protein; it's like the order of letters in a word, where the sequence determines the meaning.
What are Nucleotides?
The basic building block of DNA that link together to form long chains, which store genetic information.
What are nucleotides?
The basic building block of DNA that link together to form long chains, which store genetic information.
What is a base pair?
Two nucleotides that join together to form the structure of DNA; Adenine always pairs with Thymine and Guanine always pairs with Cytosine.
What is replication?
The process of 'copying' the whole DNA before a cell splits into two identical daughter cells.
What is transcription?
The process where a cell 'copies' a specific section of DNA.
What is adaptation?
The adjustment of organisms to their environment in order to improve their chances at survival in that environment.
What is substitution?
A genetic mutation where one set of base pairs is replaced with another set.
What is insertion?
A genetic mutation where an additional set of base pairs is inserted into the gene sequence.
What is deletion?
A genetic mutation where a set of base pairs is removed from the gene sequence.
