Neural Anatomy
The study of the structure and organization of the nervous system.
Action Potential
A rapid change in membrane potential that propagates along a neuron.
Neurotransmitter
Chemicals that transmit signals across a synapse from one neuron to another.
Hippocampus
A region of the brain associated with memory formation.
Broca's Area
A brain region located in the left hemisphere responsible for language production.
Wernicke's Area
A brain region associated with language comprehension.
Split-Brain Patient
An individual who has undergone surgery that severs the corpus callosum, leading to two independent hemispheres.
Long Term Potentiation (LTP)
A persistent increase in synaptic strength following high-frequency stimulation.
Hebbian Learning
A theory of synaptic plasticity that proposes that an increase in the synaptic strength arises from the repeated and persistent stimulation of one neuron by another.
Mass Action vs. Localization
A debate in neuroscience regarding whether brain functions are localized to specific areas or distributed across the brain.
