Liturgy
The liturgy is the Church’s official, public, communal prayer. It is God’s work in which the People of God participate.
Magisterium
The living teaching office of the Church, is responsible, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, for interpreting the Deposit of Faith.
Tradition
is the process of passing on the Gospel message. Tradition, which began with the oral communication of the Gospel by the Apostles, was written down in the Scriptures, is handed down and lived out in the life of the Church, and is interpreted by the Magisterium under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
Liturgical Year
The Church’s annual cycle of feasts and seasons that celebrates the events and mysteries of Christ’s birth, life, death, Resurrection, and Ascension, and forms the context for the Church’s worship
Symbol
An object or action that points to another reality. Leads beyond senses to a deeper mystery. (Derived from Greek word meaning “to throw together”
Ritual
An established pattern of actions, usually including words. The words and actions have symbolic meaning, so “symbolic action” is another way to refer to a ritual.
Ordained (ministries)
Refers to ministries that require ordination, such as presiding at the Eucharist, hearing confessions, administering Confirmation, and so on. Ordained ministers may also perform other ministries that can be performed by laypeople, such as distributing Communion reading the Scriptures at the liturgy, and teaching theology
3 Expressions of Prayer
Vocal: uses words to speak to God, includes memorized prayer and spontaneous prayer, can be prayed alone or in a group, and words can be spoken aloud or silently
Meditation: uses thoughts, imagination, and emotions to get in touch with God or uses Scripture, rosary, pictures, or creation as a way to focus our minds and hearts
Contemplation: wordless prayer, described as “Resting in God”, listening for God’s movement in our lives, and entering into union with God through peaceful silence
Sacramentals
Sacred signs instituted by the Church that prepare us to receive God’s grace and cooperate with it. They include blessings. They prepare us for the sacraments and contribute to our holiness, our closeness to God, in varying circumstances of our lives. Occupying an important place in the life of the Church
Prayer of the Heart
Repeating a phrase (Scripture) verse or a short prayer over and over again, calmly, and sincerely, until it becomes a part of you
