De Stijl
which means simply "the style" in Dutch
A school of art founded in Netherlands during 1917, marked especially by the use of black and white with primary colors, rectangular forms and asymmetry.
Founded by architect Gerrit Rietveld, and artists, Theo Van Doesburg and Piet Mondrian.
PIET MONDRIAN
One of the founders of the Dutch modern movement De Stijl, is recognized for the purity of his abstractions and methodical practice by which he arrived at them.
Limited his palette to black, white and the three primary colors: red, yellow and blue.
His use of asymmetrical balance and a simplified pictorial vocabulary were crucial in the development of modern art.
THEO VAN DOESBURG
One of the founders and leading theorists of De Stijl along with Piet Mondrian.
Created numerous abstract paintings and designed buildings, room decorations, stained glass, furniture, and household items that exemplified De Stijl's aesthetic theories.
GERRIT RIETVELD
One of the leading members of the De Stijl art movement.
Famous for his Red and Blue Chair and for the Rietveld Schröder House, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Rietveld designed a lot of furniture based on an inquisitive idea in which construction, form and material play an important part.
RED AND BLUE

Originally designed in 1918 but not fully realized until 1923, it is one of the canonical works of the movement.

The only building designed in complete accordance with the De Stijl aesthetic.

By J.J.P. Oud (Jacobus Johannes Pieter)
The construction took place shortly after in 1926-1927.
This was Oud's first design in a series of white housing projects and it earned him immediate international recognition.
