Ventricular System
A network of four fluid-filled cavities within the brain—comprising two lateral ventricles, the third ventricle, and the fourth ventricle—that are lined throughout with ependyma and filled with cerebrospinal fluid.
Interventricular Foramina (Foramina of Monro)
Channels through which the two lateral ventricles communicate directly with the third ventricle.
Cerebral Aqueduct (Aqueduct of Sylvius)
A narrow channel that connects the third ventricle to the fourth ventricle.
Terminal Ventricle
A small dilatation located at the inferior end of the central canal in the spinal cord.

Origin and Circulation of Cerebrospinal Fluid
The pathway of CSF produced by choroid plexuses through the lateral ventricles, interventricular foramina, third ventricle, cerebral aqueduct, fourth ventricle, central canal, and subarachnoid space, returning to venous blood via arachnoid granulations.

Hydrocephalus
A pathological condition characterized by an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid causing enlargement of the brain ventricles and elevated intracranial pressure.

Ventricular Shunt
A surgical placement of a frontal catheter into an enlarged ventricle attached to a tube that diverts excess cerebrospinal fluid into the abdomen.
Diencephalon
A midline brain structure with symmetrical right and left halves surrounding the third ventricle, bounded laterally by the internal capsule and divided into the thalamus, subthalamus, epithalamus, and hypothalamus.
Fornix
A thick bundle of fibers originating in the hippocampus of the temporal lobe that arches posteriorly over the thalamus to join the mammillary body, concealing the superior surface of the diencephalon.
Tela Choroidea of the Third Ventricle
A vascular fold of pia mater covering the roof of the third ventricle superiorly, from which the choroid plexuses project downward into the cavity of the third ventricle.
Hypothalamic Sulcus
A shallow groove on the medial surface of the diencephalon separating the superior thalamus from the inferior hypothalamus.
Stria Medullaris Thalami
A bundle of afferent nerve fibers to the habenular nucleus that forms a ridge along the superior margin of the medial surface of the diencephalon.
Thalamus
The largest part of the diencephalon, consisting of two large lateral nuclear masses connected by a central interthalamic adhesion; functions as the sensory relay center for all sensory pathways to the cerebrum except olfaction.
Medial Geniculate Nucleus
A nucleus of the thalamus that serves as a relay center for auditory information.
Lateral Geniculate Nucleus
A nucleus of the thalamus that serves as a relay center for visual information.
Ventral Posterior Nucleus
A thalamic nucleus responsible for relaying most general sensory sensations (other than vision and hearing) to the cerebral cortex.
Ventral Anterior and Ventral Lateral Nuclei
Motor-related nuclei of the thalamus that communicate with the basal nuclei, cerebellum, and motor cortex.
Pulvinar and Lateral Posterior Nuclei
Nuclei in the dorsal tier of the thalamus involved in sensory integration.

Thalamic Nuclei Arrangement
The anatomical organization of nuclear masses in the thalamus, including the anterior, medial, ventral, and dorsal tiers as well as geniculate bodies.
Thalamic Lesions
Structural damage usually caused by arterial thrombosis or hemorrhage that leads to contralateral impairment of sensations, including light touch, tactile localization, discrimination, and joint position sense.
Subthalamus
A region located immediately inferior to the thalamus containing subthalamic nuclei, portions of the red nucleus and substantia nigra, which connects with the basal nuclei to control motor functions.
Subthalamic Lesions
Damage to extrapyramidal motor structures in the subthalamus, resulting in sudden, forceful involuntary movements in a contralateral extremity that may be jerky (choreiform) or violent (ballistic).

Choreiform Gait
An involuntary, irregular, jerky, hyperkinetic gait pattern associated with extrapyramidal motor system lesions.
Epithalamus
A small area located superior and posterior to the thalamus comprising the habenula and the pineal gland.
Habenula
An epithalamic structure influenced by the sense of smell that coordinates emotional and visceral responses to odors.
Pineal Gland
A pinecone-shaped endocrine gland in the epithalamus that secretes melatonin to regulate sleep-wake cycles and photoperiodic functions.
Hypothalamus
The most inferior part of the diencephalon containing various nuclei and tracts; regulates body temperature, food and water intake, autonomic functions, emotions, sleep-wake cycles, and pituitary gland secretion.
Mammillary Bodies
Prominent rounded bulges on the ventral surface of the diencephalon/hypothalamus involved in olfactory reflexes, emotional responses to odors, and memory.
Infundibulum
A funnel-shaped stalk extending from the floor of the hypothalamus that attaches it to the pituitary gland.
Suprachiasmatic Nucleus
A hypothalamic nucleus receiving direct visual input regarding light/dark cycles to coordinate responses to the sleep-wake cycle; implicated in jet lag.
Paraventricular and Supraoptic Nuclei
Hypothalamic nuclei that regulate pituitary secretions and serve as the sites of antidiuretic hormone (ADH) and oxytocin synthesis.
Preoptic Area
A hypothalamic region controlling parasympathetic functions, heat loss promotion during increased body temperature, sexual development/arousal, and acting as the primary target where aspirin reduces fever.
Ventromedial Nucleus
A hypothalamic nucleus containing the satiety center that inhibits eating, while also influencing sexual development, arousal, and behavior.
