INDIGENOUS MATERIALS
materials that are natural or inherent from the place or locality. It has been there right from the start. All indigenous art materials are local materials but not all local art materials are indigenous.
ABACA
Belongs to banana family. Its fiber has a natural luster with colors ranging from pure white to ivory and dark brown
BAKBAK
The outermost covering leaf sheath of the abaca stalk. It is a flat thick durable sheath as twine or braided. The strong brown fiber used to make furniture
BUNTAL
A cylindrical shaped fibers. The supple ivory white are quite durable, pliable, and have
a good dyeing qualities.
BURI
It is extracted from the matured leaves of the buri palm. The fiber is durable and
resistant to moisture
RAFFIA
A fiber extracted from unopened buri leaf in three stages. It is a loom woven into
fabrics or used as wall coverings, upholstery material, folding doors, and windows
hanging.
NITO
A plant belonging to the fern family that grows abundantly in hinterlands of Mindanao.
COIR
It is a fibrous material surrounding the fruit of the coconut tree
PANDAN
A tropical plant that is processed and transformed into splints that are being used as raw material
TIKIW
A large, erect, and aquatic or marshy herb plant. It bounds in freshwater swamps in newly open ricelands and low altitudes.
TIKOG
Belongs to sea grasses. It is a native reed plant used as a raw material for mat weaving
BAMBOO
It is used as a raw material for creating many products, constructions, textile, musical instruments, and weapons
