Allegory
A story within a story. It has a hidden meaning behind it.
Alliteration
The occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words.
Allusion
A reference to something else or mention of some other work
Analogy
Two unrelated objects are compared for their shared qualities.
Anecdote
A very short story that is significant to the topic at hand; usually adding personal knowledge or experience to the topic.
Antagonist
The opposite of the protagonist, or main character. Typically, this is a villain of some kind, but not always! It’s just the opponent of the main character, or someone who gets in their way.
Apostrophe
A punctuation mark ( ’ ) used to indicate either possession (e.g., Harry's book ; boys' coats ) or the omission of letters or numbers (e.g., can't ; he's ; class of ’99 ).
Aside
A short speech delivered by a character in a play, intended to be heard by the audience but not by the other characters on stage
Blank verse
Verse without rhyme, especially that which uses iambic pentameter.
