Discuss the Abrahamic Religions. (What are they? What do they have in common? How are they different?)
The Abrahamic Religions are Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. They all believe in one God and their roots are from Abraham. Judaism, Islam, and Christianity all believe in an afterlife. They all believe in prayer, charity, justice, and pilgrimage. Judaism focuses on covenant and law or the Torah. Christianity centers its belief on Jesus and how he is the divine son of God and how he died to pay for our sins. Islam focuses on emphasizing submission to Allah and through Muhammad’s final revelation the Quran and the five pillars.
Explain the founding of Rome and what the story teaches us.
Two brothers were abandoned by their mother, Romulus, and Remus. They were sent down a river in a basket by their mother, then a wolf found them and took care of them. Eventually a shepherd took care of them. Until they went off on their own to start a country. The two fought over what the country would be named, and Romulus killed Remus and named Rome after himself. This story foreshadows the leadership issues, teaches the founding of Rome, and teaches the values and beliefs of Romans.
Discuss the RISE and the FALL of Rome.
The rise of Rome was because of the pride that Romans had for Rome much like Americans. They became very skilled fighters by choosing to go to war constantly and winning. They then would keep those captured people to choose to join their army or die. Their placement of the Capitol was on the Tiber River that led out to the Mediterranean and allowed them to trade easily and hard for incoming attacks from ships since the capitol was inland. The downfall of Rome consisted of Constantine's reign when he made christianity legal. Christianity made the people not want to fight, allowing barbarians to attack easier. Constantine moved the capitol making it hard for future people in power to manage the rest of Rome.
Explain the Feudal System and its Impact On The Middle Ages.
The Feudal System is the middle ages form of government. It consists of the King at the top that controls and holds most of the money and land. The next step below the King is called the Nobles and they watch over and manage the land given to them by the King. The next step down is the Knights or Vassals and they are the police of the land that makes sure that the land is protected. The Peasants are the majority of the population and they work the land and tend to the fields. Everyone a part of the Feudal System has to pay taxes to the King. The feudal system created a social hierarchy that would dictate how good your life was financially and living conditions.
Describe one of the major events from the Middle Ages.
The Black Plague was a major even in the middle ages. It was the first massive pandemic of its time and wiped out over half of the European population. It changed culture by all art and literature talking about death and havoc in Europe. The Black Plague gave the people a wake up call to start trying to find cures to the plague and it called them to use herbs and find a medicine for other sicknesses as well. The Plague affected Europe so much that it completely tore apart the church and caused many to doubt the church's teachings entirely. It put depression and hatred into people’s minds because of the chaos and confusion the Black Plague caused Europe.
What were the impacts of Columbus landing in the New World? Discuss the impacts, DO NOT just list them.
Columbus impacted Europe by landing in the New World by making a trade route between territories. The New World had many resources that Europeans did not have so it allowed easy access of goods. Europe would end up sending over slaves, tobacco, and other crops and livestock to America. America would in return send over different crops and livestock that they had. Even though Columbus established something good like a trading route. He also killed an entire population of Natives to get to this point of attaining a well constructed trading route.
Pick two of the Renaissance Philosophers and describe their ideas.
Two Renaissance Philosophers are Niccolo Machiavelli and Leonardo Da Vinci. Machiavelli is most known for his ideas for modern political ideas in ruthlessly getting and maintaining power. He argued rulers should be willing to be cunning and ruthless to gain and even keep their power from others. He even wrote a book called “The Prince” explaining all his political Ideas. Da Vinci was not only a well known artist as he made the Mona Lisa but he was also a Humanist. Many of his ideas involved his takes on human existence and humanity's purpose in life.
Discuss the French Revolution. Who was in control of France, how was society set up, what led to the downfall of France?
The French Revolution involved many executions of ordinary people because of little mishaps. The man behind the law at this time was King Louis VI and Marie Antoinette. Society was shifting from a feudalistic government system to a republic focused on liberty and equality. During this time was also called the Reign of Terror because King Louis VI and Marie Antoinette would govern the people very poorly. They had many public executions for prisoners and even ordinary people. There were also big shifts in power because the church lost land while the king and queen were getting executed.
Explain how philosophical ideas, economic pressure, and propaganda threw America into the Revolutionary War.
There were philosophical ideas like enlightenment, economic pressure such as taxation. Propaganda and unification were also philosophical ideas that threw America into the Revolutionary War. John Locke used the ideology of enlightenment and campaigned natural rights like life, liberty and property. He also campaigned ideas that deeply resonated with colonists questioning British authority. Taxation helped put America into the Revolutionary War because there was a rising propaganda of “Taxation without Representation.” Propaganda also known as “unification” threw America into the Revolutionary War one reason being Thomas Paine's pamphlet used to argue powerfully for independence, convincing many ordinary logicalists that separation was logical and necessary.
Discuss the process of shifting from an agrarian society to an industrial-focused society.
The switch between agrarian and industrial focused societies involved first the ideas on how to make a process faster and more efficient. Many people were involved with helping the switch primarily because they had an idea on how to make a specific process better. An invention that came out of the Agricultural revolution was the seed drill made by Jehro Tull. Then once specific machines were made just for agriculture they then started coming up with ideas for other industries therefore transitioning ideas and technology to more industrial focused. Many different industries started coming up with ideas on how to make their processes more efficient. In the textile industry they came up with the assembly line which was an invention that consisted of teaching unskilled laborers a single task to do over and over again.
