Connective Tissue
One of the most abundant tissues in the body, functions include protection, support of organs, binding organs together, storing energy as fat, and providing immunity.
Extracellular Matrix
A key component of connective tissue, composed of a complex network of proteins and polysaccharides.
Fibroblasts
Cells that secrete fibers and ground substance in connective tissue.
Macrophages
Cells that engulf and digest cellular debris and pathogens, playing a critical role in the immune response.
Adipocytes
Fat cells that store energy in the form of fat.
Collagen Fibers
Strong fibers that resist pulling forces; composed mainly of collagen protein.
Dense Connective Tissue
Types include dense regular, dense irregular, and elastic connective tissue.
Elastic Fibers
Fibers that allow tissues to stretch and return to their original shape, primarily composed of elastin and fibrillin.
Reticular Fibers
Fine bundles of collagen that form a network supporting soft organs.
Hyaline Cartilage
A resilient, gel-like connective tissue that appears bluish-white and serves as a support structure.
Fibrocartilage
Connective tissue that provides support and rigidity; found in the pubic symphysis and intervertebral discs.
Bone Tissue
Composed of osteons in compact bone and trabeculae in spongy bone; functions in support, protection, and storage.
Osteoblasts
Bone cells responsible for the formation of bone.
Osteocytes
Mature bone cells that maintain bone tissue and reside in lacunae.
Osteoclasts
Cells that break down bone tissue; involved in bone resorption.
Canaliculi
Small channels in bone that connect lacunae and allow communication between osteocytes.
Woven Bone
Immature bone tissue characterized by a haphazard arrangement of collagen fibers.
Lamellar Bone
Mature bone tissue organized in layers or sheets.
Synovial Membranes
Membranes that line the cavities of freely movable joints, secreting synovial fluid.
Muscle Tissue
Tissue specialized for contraction and generation of force.
Skeletal Muscle
Striated muscle tissue that is under voluntary control, attached to bones.
Cardiac Muscle
Involuntary striated muscle found in the heart; controlled by pacemaker cells.
Smooth Muscle
Involuntary muscle found in walls of hollow organs and blood vessels, not striated.
Striated Muscle
Muscle tissue with a banded appearance, characteristic of skeletal and cardiac muscle.
Voluntary Control
Muscle control that is consciously initiated, such as movements of skeletal muscles.
Involuntary Control
Muscle control that occurs without conscious effort, such as in cardiac and smooth muscle.
Intercalated Disks
Specialized connections between cardiac muscle cells that enable synchronized contraction.
Gap Junctions
Connections that allow communication between adjacent smooth muscle cells.
Tendons
Fibrous tissues connecting muscles to bones.
Ligaments
Tissues that connect bones to other bones.
Adipose Tissue
Type of loose connective tissue primarily used for energy storage and insulation.
Proteoglycans
Molecules consisting of a core protein with glycosaminoglycans attached, important in connective tissues.
Hydroxyapatite
Inorganic component of bone that provides hardness and strength.
Trabeculae

Cartilage
